Renkum Stud Farm Philosophy

Since its foundation we have been trying to breed good looking, good moving showjumpers with good temperaments and friendly disposition. And foremost careful and athletic horses other owners and riders can enjoy and win on at any level!

After all, we all want to come home with a rosette when we go competing whether it is in a Newcomers or Grade A classes so they have to be genuine and careful!

Several of our homebreds have been sold abroad: Renkum Rapido and Renkum Redhill to the USA, Renkum L’Atitude and Renkum Granado to France, Renkum Demi Jete to Germany.

Some Renkum Horses have gone eventing and gone on breeding eventers like Renkum Blathain and Fiorella (2 nd Dublin young eventers class) . Harry Meade rides Jovial Valentino sold in-utero from Renkum Stud.

Others have gone into Dressage.

It’s jumpers we aim to breed and we were fortunate enough to have some really top class competition mares which competed themselves at the highest possible international level. Such as Wiston Bridget, (by kind permission of Mrs Jeanette Edwards), Pebble Beach and Cordula, Baldane, Dorenda, Inish MacNevin the last Grade A daughter of Coevers xx. And more recently Amore, Raja II and Lafleur des Collines who jumped in World Cups for Belgium.

Next to these mares we have been competing our stallions ourselves, even at International level which has given us an unique insight in their stronger and weaker points enabling us to make more considered choice with our matings. An advantage most breeders do not have.

Old farmers and breeders will tell you that the mare is more important than the stallion, something which has been scientifically proven now. The mare has an extra Y chromosome where the stallion has an empty X chromosome in its DNA. The Y –chromosone caries the material instrumental for energy and mentality of the mare and is of the most importance as this will pass on generation after generation through her daughters and grand daughters but only if the mare herself is exceptional.

For this reason only it is very important that a stallion is out of an exceptional mare with these rare ‘powers’ and is the reason that we only use the sons of these mares and we value them higher then lots of fashionable foreign horses from fashionable male-lines without top performance from the dams side.

We like to think that our horses resemble the old working horses in their attitude, hard working, sound and gut-busting but in a modern exterior.

Pebble Beach gave us, after winning £97.000, Renkum Off-Centre, the ugly duckling that grew into a beautiful powerful horse which represented Great Britain and Renkum Stud twice at the World Championships at Lanaken 2006 and 2007. a week after Lanaken 2007 he jumped at the CIO-3star at St.Lo in Normandy ridden by Ronnie Healy before he was sold to Mrs. Catharine Witt to be ridden by Peter Murphy. He was only 6 years old then and so full of promise.

We now have his full brother Renkum Statecraft who has always been very beautiful from birth and very athletic. He would require some serious money before we would part with him but you never know. Needs must!

Off Centre left us some wonderful youngsters and we put some of his best sons in the auction in order to enable us to keep his daughters.

Genetically speaking his son Renkum Rock & Roll could be of great interest being out of the famous mare Wiston Bridget who, although of unorthodox breeding ( Hanovarian x Clydesdale) proved herself to be as good as any in the biggest Nations Cups in the World at Aachen and Calgary. Her historic second place to Welham in the Hickstead Derby is still clear in everyone’s mind; the only horse ever to jump double clear and not win!

Rock & Roll combines the genes of both Bridget and Pebble Beach who herself won the 5 star Grand Prix of Jerez de la Frontera and Gijon. Valentino complimented this with his quality, athletisism and his willingness.

Maybe we should only be selling half shares in these two colts as one day they will be very expensive competition horses and stallions.

The foals we entered for the auction are a bit special too: Kulocia, Val’s full sister has a cracking good colt by the Holsteiner stallion Caretello B who stands in Southern Germany and produced amongst others Camirez B who won the Grand Prix at Olympia with Toni Hassman a few years ago.

Kasuga Rouge has an illustrious International jumping pedigee being by the Leading Sire of 2007 Papillon Rouge out of an international jumping mare by Tigre Rouge and again out of an well known international mare called’Javeuse’

Her colt by R.Valentino shows just what a good cross Val makes with French mares.

The other foals are all of the same quality with equally good pedigrees.

The stallions we have used over the last 10 years Are:
